Understand how to respond when abuse or neglect is suspected and your reporting obligations.

As clinicians, we interact with our patients on a regular basis. Therefore, it is a pivotal aspect of practice to recognize when that individual is the victim of abuse. The abuse can be financial, emotional, or physical. Nurses, who spend more time with patients than any other health care professionals, are in an ideal position to identify, intervene in, report, and generally lead the way in preventing abuse. The ultimate goal of this topic is to offer you an appreciation of the prevalence of abuse, to offer you a greater understanding of the variations of abuse, and to offer you an understanding of how to respond when abuse or neglect is suspected. Hopefully, by utilizing a host of clinical scenarios and implementing evidence-based data, you will depart with a heightened awareness for the incidence, the prevalence, and reaction strategies.
