Gain an understanding of the regulations and compliance issues health care providers face when providing telemedicine services beyond a local scope.

With the increased use of digital health technology in health care delivery, including telehealth and remote monitoring devices, the range of services and service providers has expanded dramatically from physicians only to now include nonphysician practitioners such as nurses, therapists and counselors as well as other allied health providers. “Local is now global” as telehealth services have expanded beyond the individual states and across the U.S., but also to other countries. This expanded telehealth market presents laws and regulations governing telehealth, both in the US and internationally. This topic will inform health care providers, administrators, IT professionals, business and financial managers as well as attorneys who are either considering or already engaged in international operations involving the use of remote telehealth technology about the broad scope and complexity of its use in health care both domestically and abroad. We will discuss the barriers to entry into this expanding industry, the complex regulatory environment in which it operates and approaches to implementation. We will focus on the following areas during this topic: foreign corrupt practices act; medical licensure, credentialing and privileging; privacy and security; fraud and abuse laws and professional liability.
